The Medjool (also spelled Medjoul) is a large, soft, caramel-sweet date cultivar of Phoenix dactylifera originally from Morocco, now grown at commercial scale in the low desert of California (Coachella Valley/Bard Valley) and Arizona, USA, where the hot, arid climate and irrigation from desert aquifers/canals suit date palm cultivation.
Medjool palms were introduced into the US in 1927 from a small disease-surviving stock imported from Morocco, propagated first in Arizona and then expanded into California's Coachella Valley, which today is one of the largest Medjool-growing regions outside the Middle East/North Africa; premium grading (Jumbo/Extra Fancy) is based on size, moisture, and cosmetic quality standards used by California/Arizona date packers.
US Medjool dates are marketed as a premium, traceable, non-Middle-East-sourced alternative to Gulf-region Medjools, appealing to US, EU and increasingly Asian health-food and natural-snacking markets; Coachella Valley is also a well-known agritourism date-growing region, reinforcing provenance marketing value.
US-grown Medjool dates fall under USDA grading standards for dates (grade categories such as Fancy/Choice/Standard alongside size categories like Jumbo/Extra Large) and standard FDA food-safety/export documentation; no CITES or special wildlife regulation applies, though organic or Fair Trade claims require separate USDA Organic or third-party certification if made on packaging.
