Rose-toned geranium oil from Egypt's Nile Valley — nature's rose oil extender.

Geranium oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of Pelargonium graveolens (and related P. x asperum hybrids), yielding an oil rich in citronellol, geraniol and citronellyl formate that gives it a rose-like, slightly minty aroma. It is one of the most widely used natural aromatics in perfumery as a lower-cost extender or substitute for true rose otto.
Egypt's Nile Valley and Delta (including Fayoum governorate) support commercial cultivation of geranium alongside other export aromatics such as mint, chamomile and basil, with local steam distillation supplying international fragrance and cosmetics buyers. Egyptian geranium is recognised in the trade as its own distinct grade, generally differentiated from Réunion 'Bourbon' geranium and Chinese geranium oil by its aromatic profile.
Demand is driven by the fragrance and flavour industry's use of geranium oil as a cost-effective rose-note component in perfumes, soaps and cosmetics, plus aromatherapy and natural skincare buyers. Principal purchasers are flavour and fragrance houses, contract oil blenders, and natural/organic cosmetics brands seeking GC-MS-verified batches.
Geranium oil carries no CITES restriction. Egyptian essential-oil exports are subject to General Organization for Export & Import Control (GOEIC) phytosanitary and quality certification, and downstream fragrance use is governed by IFRA usage standards and EU/US cosmetic-ingredient (REACH/IFRA, FDA) safety requirements; buyers typically require a batch certificate of analysis (GC-MS) confirming citronellol/geraniol ratios.
