Detailed study

Norwegian king crab is the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus), a large cold-water crustacean prized for its sweet, firm leg and claw meat. It is not native to Norwegian waters — it was deliberately introduced to the Russian Barents Sea coast in the 1960s and has since spread westward into Norwegian waters, where it is now managed as both a valuable fishery and, outside the regulated zone, an invasive species requiring active culling.

Provenance & producer

Wild-caught by Norwegian fishing vessels in the Barents Sea off Finnmark, within a government-managed quota zone. Norway's Directorate of Fisheries issues strict individual and vessel quotas to balance commercial harvest with ecosystem management, since uncontrolled king crab populations damage native benthic habitats.

Market & pricing

Export-grade Norwegian king crab is a premium seafood product sold live or fresh-frozen to high-end restaurants and retailers across the EU, US and Asia; exports have risen notably in recent years, partly displacing Russian-origin king crab following sanctions on Russian seafood in several Western markets.

Compliance & export

Regulated under Norway's Marine Resources Act and annual Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries quota decisions; catch is limited to a defined geographic management zone in East Finnmark. Export requires Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) health certification and compliance with EU/importing-country shellfish import rules; no CITES listing applies to this species.
