Detailed study

True (English) lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, is steam-distilled for its essential oil, valued for high linalyl acetate and linalool content. Cooler growing climates generally favour true lavender over the hybrid lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) grown widely in warmer regions, and tend to produce oil with lower camphor content and a softer, more refined aroma.

Provenance & producer

Tasmania's Bridestowe Lavender Estate, near Nabowla in the state's north-east, was established in 1922 and is believed to be the largest commercial plantation of Lavandula angustifolia in the world. Tasmania's cool, maritime climate suits true lavender cultivation rather than the lavandin hybrids common in hotter Mediterranean-climate regions.

Market & pricing

Tasmanian lavender occupies a premium niche versus mainstream Bulgarian/French lavandin bulk oil, targeted at high-end cosmetics, fine fragrance and Australian wellness/tourism-linked product lines (Bridestowe itself is also a significant agritourism destination). Volumes are comparatively small, supporting a higher per-kilo price than commodity lavender oil.

Compliance & export

No CITES restriction applies. Exports are subject to Australian biosecurity and quarantine (Department of Agriculture) certification; true lavender oil quality/composition can be verified against the ISO 3515 standard for Lavandula angustifolia oil.
